So, what exactly is powder coating?
Powder coating is a state-of-the-art dry finishing procedure that's a cut above traditional paint methods. The technique involves using finely milled particles of pigment and resin to achieve a wide array of colors and finishes. This cutting-edge procedure, popular among San Diego car enthusiasts, offers higher surface gloss levels and greater durability.
Our team uses Electrostatic Spray Deposition (ESD) - the most widespread method, where the powder is sprayed onto the metal component, adhering to its surface through electrostatic attraction. The powder and metal are then fused together by applying heat, resulting in a flawless and long-lasting finish.
The powder coating procedure is a three-step process:
Pretreatment: This pivotal step prepares your rims for the powder coating application, optimizing the results. We treat the metal surfaces using either an acid-based product for etching or a phosphating solution to convert the surface into a protective layer. This not only aids powder adhesion, but also improves resistance to corrosion, rust, and weathering, ensuring your rims look immaculate and stand the test of time.
Spraying: This phase involves the actual application of the powder coating. Using an electrostatic gun, we charge the powder and spray it onto the grounded part. This technique, although more costly than traditional liquid paint, ensures a thicker, tougher, and more resistant coating.
Curing: This final stage cements the powder coating application. Your rims are placed in a curing oven at a precise temperature for a specific duration. This process creates a hard, protective skin around the wheel and imparts the final finish. The resultant coating can withstand various conditions and resists wear and tear, promising long-lasting beauty and durability.
